December 26 The day after.Today is the 26th and I am happy! Christmas was pleasant but I always relish the quiet that comes after. It is raining today and we didn't have our snow but it WILL come. So....i am alone, I can play my CD's, thoroughly enjoying " Meditations for Christmas," and occassionally checking on the birds at the feeder and thinking about reheating some of yesterdays lasagna. This is the time I can reflect a little and think about the coming year.
I'm still working on the orchids that came the other day. I bought several and they came bare rooted and without pots. Were we scurrying around! I have two seedlings sitting in a desert dish and need to order a few supplies as soon as I am more fully awake. I usually order mine from a large orchid house,(not that I have so many,) and they always came in a pot. I purchased these on eBay, and they came laying down in cellophane and confetti, bare roots and no soil or moisture. I was speechless! But I think they will survive but I will have to pay closer attention to that. I also had to discard two of my orchids that I over fertilized and eventually went into root rot. I was and am so disheartened since they were my larged Phals and bloomed well for me. But that is how a novice learns.
One of the things I want to do is become more deliberate in my reading. I have a number of books I purchased this past year and I'm looking forward to a bit more free time while winter is coming upon us. Winters take on a whole new dimension and gives me a little bit more freedom to do with what I want. And of course, after the new year I start planning for some of my outdoor projects. I've lived here since 1980 and if you can believe, I still have things to do! It is a never ending cycle but.....it is something I very much enjoy doing.
I'm sure I will have an entry or two before the New Year but until then I hope your souls are at peace and that the holiday gave you moments of joy. Bittersweet December 17 Sunday morning. This morning was a treat. My brother ran out early morning and picked up some lox, bagels and cream cheese for a Sunday treat. So at the moment I am enjoying the afterglow of satisfaction and enjoying my second cup of coffee. This is always part of our perfect Sundays; interspursed with enjoying the NY Times and a NY Giants win. I can see where this is confession time. I am an avid NY Yankee, Knicks and Giants fan. I don't watch a lot of basketball or baseball but Sunday afternoons with the NY Giants is sacred time. And most definitely a University of Arizona Wildcat basketball fan. Good thing I live in the east at the moment so my thrill is just purusing the paper for scores. And of course we do have the Giant/Eagles game this afternoon. I know, I know.....the picture doesn't really make sense....poetess, reader, gardener and cook enjoying football! But I can come out of the closet now. Laughing with you.
By tonight I hope most things will be done....that being primarily that both the indoor and outdoor tree will be fully lit! It has been a battle royal but we had to use some staging to reach the top of the tree. I've added a picture of the tree on my most recent album . It is number 7 and 8 of the 8 picture album. So when it gets dark and it snows, I will most definitely will take some pictures.
Thank you to those that stopped by. Steve, I enjoyed your recent pictures of "Friday's Sun." If anyone wants to see what reduced daylight light is like in alaska, these are good pictures. And.....please visit Marie's photos of the Japanese temples and gardens. Just stunning. A treat in itself.
So I shall embark on my day. May your day go well. Bittersweet December 15 Thursday evening. It is hard to believe that so much time has elapsed since my last entry. But hello to all. I see "c", "S", Jorge and Marie have visited since I last stopped by.
Well let's begin with the flora cart. It came and we finally got it set up. It is a tad big but a wonderful way to keep an eye on the orchids and display them as well. With the help of a compter geek, we got the stand together and all the grow lights set up. Orchids got transferred from the bathroom and into the kitchen so I hope they find much happiness in their new space. And I must confess, since I have 9 orchids coming in the next few days, there were ulterior motives as well. The bathroom is only just so big.
The outdoor lights aren't quite up as yet but we are making progress. The scaffolding was erected this afternoon so I think tomorrow is the day! The only possible glitch is that the hardware store just ran out of the small white lights. They had a sale and the place was cleaned out. But there are other places.
Last Sunday I asked the youngest member of the family to burn some boxes. The car port was loaded with boxes and it certainly wasn't something I wanted sitting around for the holidays. Unbeknownst to be, a lot of the left-over building materials from the house my brother just completed was put in a pile across the street on the burn pile. It's not something I see from the house since it is on a small parcel of land across the street and trees and wet land kind of hide it from view. When i sent him out with the boxes, I only envisioned burning a few boxes in the trash barrel. I was in the bathroom and looking out and thought it kind of funny that cars were slowing down and all of a sudden a fire truck turned around on the driveway. I then ran to the front of the house and there must have been a 10 or 12 foot high fire. The front of the house was lit up as if it were a shopping center at night. I can't tell you how angry I was. Procedure is that you call the State Police and let them know you are doing a "controlled burn," so that if someone does call in, they won't send the fire trucks. Of course when the State Police do show up it usually is with a ticket for stupidity and a hefty fine of $250. I told him dinner would be delayed several hours until the fire was contained and something like that usually smolders all night long. Somehow youngest brother convinced them he had things under control and the fire department drove off. On top of it, the boxes were never burned!
Things are quieter today. I spent part of the day calling friends throughout the states and wishing them a happy holiday. It is a gift to talk with folks you haven't spoken to in more than a year. And some people deserve more than just a Christmas card!
Well I hope time permits a visit back before the holidays get into full swing. Until.... Bittersweet
December 05 A dusting of snow.I guess I can say we had our first snow for the season. Nothing dramatic like a wild and wooly nor'easter but a dusting that left most things almost white. And enough for the snow plow to rumble through which we always laugh at. But a salting for the comuters is always good. I do believe that Thursday we may get some accumulating snow so winter excitement really begins. And I was promised that the outdoor tree lights will go up this week.
Well our furnace decided to play games again with us. It decided to take a vacation last evening and I do believe it is the quality of oil they use and all the additives they put into the oil to get the most burning power possible. This is the sixth call since last March and our options are running out before we say enough. It's not an old furnace - maybe 10 or 12 years old, so I'm not happy about the prospects of putting in a new system. Maybe we can get through the season anyway.
Yesterday I was pleased that I finally found an on-line site where I could get solid tablecloths for purchase. Since I have an oriental rug on the dining room floor, I really need a solid colored tablecloth. So I purchased a hunter green for the holidays and a periwinkle for the spring and summer. And I added a dozen white napkins to go with it. So I'm pleased with how the Christmas Eve table setting will come together. I'm expecting 8 for dinner so I think it will work out nicely.
Well, I treated myself to a flora stand. It's a tad big but it will accommodate my orchids quite nicely in the kitchen. It has all the lighting I need and the water trays so I'm quite happy with it. So the orchids will be moved from the bathroom to the kitchen. Hopefully this will be the last move.
I suppose many of you are asking.....why get into orchids? Well it started as a gift and since I have about 15 of them I decided I better get serious about them. Growing orchids takes a lot of patience and a lot of trial and error. They say it is easy to grow orchids; yes and no. It can be very intimidating! If you underwater they dry out, if you over water the roots rot, if you over-fertilize they poison themselves and "blast" out. One of my phals just did that and it was my mistake. And you tend to them a whole year if not two just to see them bloom again. The whole thing is the process of zen; love, care and attention and you never know. You just keep trying and giving of yourself.
Well today may be a reading day as I wait for the furnace repairman. They hope they can get here this morning and so do I!
Anyway, I hope your day does well. Peace........Bittersweet on-the-hill
